On one evening, heading home with a social event on the horizon, I found myself in a fashion dilemma. Unable to envision something unique, I turned to my mother's wardrobe, a practice many can relate to. Be it silk, tussar, cotton, or georgette, I often heard the words, "Megha, you look just like your mother."
As I reflected on what my wardrobe lacked, it dawned on me that, when seeking to convey a special expression, I instinctively turned to my mother's closet. In the whirlwind of the fast-paced fashion industry, I realised we were becoming entangled in the cycle of commerce and consumerism. The demand for new pieces every week left us with no profound connection to what we wear.
In contrast, our mothers and grandmothers preserved a timeless treasure trove of stories, legacies, and heritage in their wardrobes. Fashion, throughout history, has been a mirror reflecting the times, a tool for crafting identities. Diana Vreeland's words resonated: "Fashion must be the most intoxicating release from the banality of the world."
It was then that I understood the power of mindful, ethical, and slow fashion—sometimes, simple is more beautiful. That realisation became my tipping point!
I'm Megha, the proud founder of Sutralasya. In 2023, I bid farewell to a 14-year corporate career, exchanging comfort and paychecks for a journey filled with curiosity and optimism. Immersing myself in artisan communities and the beauty of traditional art, I witnessed the gradual loss of unique tactile quality and market share of handlooms and crafts to power looms.
Sutralasya, a homegrown brand specialising in handcrafted and handloom clothing, was born from a goal to transcend geographical boundaries and curate a retail space dedicated to celebrating India's rich cultural heritage. Our foundation is rooted in authenticity, sustainability, and inclusivity, shaping our identity as a dynamic maker-to-market platform.
